What does WPI-8 mean? What is it? Who needs and why?

I get those and similar questions often. If you are moving to the Texas coastal area from just about anywhere else you have probably never hear of a WPI-8. I’m sure somebody in the Texas Home Insurance industry can tell us what those letters stand for but I will just taker a guess.

Since the term originated with TWIA (Texas Windstorm Insurance Association) my guess is something like Windstorm Protection Insurance form #8. Actually it is a certificate not a form. It is issued for most structures built in the 13 coastal counties of Texas and in Harris county on the Seaward side of Texas Hwy 146.

You only need it if you have a property in one of these areas and want to have windstorm insurance on that property. Since no insurance company would issue windstorm insurance in these areas at an affordable rate, the government stepped in. TWIA was created and made a part of the TDI (Texas Dept. of Insurance).

Now to quit being a smart aleck and give you some real answers. Every question you could possibly have is already sitting out there in the internet just waiting ro be found,. So whatever question you have about a WPI-8 just click here and spent a few minutes reading,

Or, you just want to know if a WPI-8 has been issued on a property you hope to buy. If that is all you want you just need the address – click here; https://appscenter.tdi.texas.gov/windstorm/p/searchForAppl
